This question is from Jenny who wants to know where to locate some Bible verses. I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about what the Bible says about the topic as well
I know in the Bible it talks about staying away from
astrology and horoscopes. I was hoping you could help me find those
scriptures.Jenny
There are a lot of Christians who read horoscopes and just have fun with them. They don’t necessarily believe them or rely on them they just think they are a harmless diversion.
This is not an exhaustive article on astrology and the Christian; just some thoughts for the ladies who read here about what it means to follow a horoscope, follow God and be discerning.
Truly, we have liberty as Christians to enjoy fun things. And I would never judge you to be doing something wrong if you enjoy having fun with a horoscope because I don’t know your heart or your motives. But I do feel like I need to caution any Christian who is dabbling with horoscopes or astrology because God’s Word cautions us not to have anything to do with it. At the worst it is an occult practice. At the best it is a worthless and useless practice (Titus 3:9).
- Constellations have been tracked and studied for millennia.
- The ancient Greeks and Egyptians knew about the Zodiac and used it to keep track of the arrival of each season long before Christ was born.
- Men have used the constellations to tell the story of God’s redemptive plan.
- The Bible has many references to the stars and to the fact that God created constellations. The Bible tells us in Genesis 1:14 that the sun, moon and stars were given to us as “signs” and “seasons” which means they are given to us to use to measure time.
- The stars were used as a memorial to Abraham so that every time he looked at the night sky he was reminded of God’s promise (Genesis 15:5).
- In Isaiah 13, Joel 3 and Matthew 26 we’re told of astronomical events that will accompany the final judgment of the earth.
However, there is no indication in God’s Word that the constellations have any hidden meaning at all.
Astrology is a false belief that wisdom comes from the stars. Our wisdom comes from God alone (James 1:5). Remember Daniel? His wisdom from God brought the royal astrologers to shame.
God lists astrologers as those who will share a part in being burned to stubble in Isaiah 47, God forbade the Israelites to worship the “host of heaven” in Deuteronomy 4 and astrology is forbidden by God in Deuteronomy 18.
That’s what the Bible says about astrology. I had rather be so consumed with Jesus and His Kingdom that I don’t give a thought to looking at a horoscope or playing with astrology. I pray fervently that God will keep me from indulging in useless practices, however innocent they may seem, that may take my eyes off of Jesus.
I am so glad I asked Google what the bible says about Horoscopes. I’m in a relationship and we have some differences. The signs of each of us show that my love would be more compatible with a sign other than mine. Gee, I wish I had not looked!! It gave me a negative message.
I had prayed to God for the man I am with. We are not married but I would like to be. That is one of our differences. After almost 2 years together he says he love me like a wife and feels married to me but we are in financial straits that don’t allow us to live together. We’re in a senior housing status. Each have our own apartment. Even my pastor says to just enjoy our time together and not worry about getting married. That still isn’t good enough for me. It would complete our love in my opinion. I feel offended that my love does not feel the same way.
Thank you for this posting. I will concentrate on NEVER looking at the ridiculous horoscope page again. God brought this man into my life and I will concentrate on His will .
Thanks,
Kitty
Thank you for commenting, Kitty.
If you are a Christian, then I can understand your concerns about this. I don’t have to explain to you what is and what isn’t appropriate according to the Bible. If you are wanting a marriage in every way, you need to actually be married. Otherwise, you’re living like the people of the world, in sin.
I can also understand your desire to have a close relationship in your mature years. Nothing wrong with that. But unless your friend wants to get married, I’d recommend you keep the relationship platonic.
Good morning, Its seems the more you worship God, the more the enemy tries to deceive you. I only look at the Zodiac signs couple of days but it started to draw me in because I was dating this guy and it seems everything that was posted about his sign was true. A loner, When moody stays away for long period of time, etc. Then I had to remember im a God fearing woman and need to seek God first. I thank you for responding back to people cause it truly open my eyes to not believe everything you see when It looks like its speaking to your situation. Like the scripture says: Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not into thy own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he still direct your path.
Hi, my husband recently got a large tattoo of the taurus horoscope sign. (its a huge bull with really mean eyes and it has a star behind it) It really upset me when he did this. I told him I don’t think God will be pleased with this or any tattoo. It just really hurts that he put an astrology sign on his body. It seems to be healing incorrectly as well. I want to tell him that it is because he should have never dissapointed God, but I don’t think. I should. God has been so good to us, I can’t believe my husband! I have been going as far to wonder if i should continue our marriage. I just want to put God first. Do you have any advice or scripture we could read and can you please pray for him as i will too.
Hi Tina
You’re thinking of ending your marriage because your husband has a tattoo that isn’t healing? Or because he is doing something you believe is disappointing to God? I don’t understand either of those motives. I don’t believe either is right.
I do understand your hurt about him doing something to his body that you feel is wrong. BUT your husband is more important that his tattoo. Your marriage musn’t be based on him doing things your way. You say you want to put God first. You can put God first by putting your husband ahead of yourself. So unless I am missing something, and I could be…. I’d say, forget about the tattoo and love him, pray for him.
And yes, I will pray for the two of you.
Thanks so much 4 ur message, May God continue to use u to reach out to those who are lost. Am blessded with those readings of yours and other peoples comments you replied expecially that of Todd who had a misconception of biblical guide on Astrology.
Thank you, Doris.
thank you so very much for sharing, may the lord our father God ,Jesus bless you my sister in Jesus name amen, love always donise, i used to be lost, but now i’m found, i keep searching for the truth, i just learned we are not surpose to draw a picture or pictures of jesus, i painted a picture i thought is jesus, i put in my window, i believe i need to take it down, and perhaps throw it away? because i found ot jesus did not have long hair like everyone says, because in Gods word it says its veil,a shame, disgrace for man to have long hair.i did not know this, all these pictures of jesus with long hair ive seen every where, i ‘d like to know who is this jesus with long hair, is it really a picture of the devil? is this another trick, as the devil also can come as a light. please write and tell me more. i do have bibles many, i look into to see which one ,they have changed the words to understand , but changed around too, please write me to my face book , or on here, i will book mark this page, love donise thank you, april 11th 2013
Hello Donise, thank you so much for stopping by and for your comment.
I don’t really think its a sin to draw a picture of Jesus. No one today knows what He looked like and if you aren’t worshipping that picture, but conveying something true about Jesus, I don’t believe scripture tells us that it is wrong to do so.
I agree with you, Jesus probably did not have long hair, it wasn’t the custom of Jewish men at that time to have long hair. And yes, because the Bible tells us long hair is a disgrace on men, we know He would have been obedient to that.
The pictures of Jesus we see were probably painted and drawn by people who had some motive for doing so. Some were paid money to draw them some probably love Jesus and wanted to make a picture of Him. You and I can’t know their motives so I think have to give them the benefit of the doubt because the Bible says that love believes all thing, hopes all things.
Are those pictures really pictures of the devil? No, I really don’t think so. I just think they are images made by men and women who had motives of their own. I don’t particularly enjoy images of Jesus because I know that He probably didn’t look anything like them. Again, the Bible tells us that He was not ‘comely’ and that means He wasn’t handsome. He certainly wasn’t the brown haired/blonde haired, blue-eyed person that appears in many of those images.
I believe this article is very misleading in its open condemnation of astrology. Throughout the Old and even New Testament there are instances of Stars being used to interpret messages and as guides.
When determining what is right or wrong everything comes down to motive. Hitler used the Christian church to get his population to be subordinate, so in that instance the Christian Church was being used for an evil motive. Nothing is as black and white as you are making it out to be.
“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:”
– Genesis 1:14 in King James Version of The Bible
Let them be for SIGNS.
“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;”Luke 21:25
Some of the most outright condemnation of Astrology was in the old testament in Isaiah. This is always taken out of context as these verses were directed at the elite in Babylon whom has imprisoned the Israelite’s. God was saying to them “see if your astrologers and stargazers can save you from my wrath.”
If our Wisdom is supposed to come from God and God says himself that he has put the stars in the heavens for SIGNS then His wisdom can still come from the STARS! Was it not the Star of Bethlehem that led the wise men to Jesus?
Astrology can be evil depending on whom you are giving the glory of the sign to. Are you giving credit for the wisdom to God or are you giving credit of the wisdom to the HUMAN who interpreted it?
Todd
I believe you have confused Astrology with Astronomy. Maybe I didn’t do a good enough job differentiating between the two. When people Plant By The Signs, when folks look at the planets and note real occurrences like how the moon’s phases effect tides on the earth, those things are astronomy; science. Astrology is not a science, it is a pseudo-science created by man where people try to find meaning and direction in the stars, moons and planets. Some say they really do get personal information from the stars. I have to ask where that information comes from, it doesn’t come from God. Then it either comes from man’s mind or the Enemy’s mind.
You’re wrong about the passage in Isaiah. God wasn’t saying that Babylon’s diviners, star gazers and magicians were not going to be effective against His people and their own diviners, star gazers and magicians. Throughout all of chapter 47 God is pointing out that the Babylonians were relying on their own wisdom, riches and magic to be great and that they were going to be judged for it. He also points out that they can’t save themselves through star gazing and the
Deuteronomy 4:19 says: “And beware lest you lift up your eyes to the heavens, and when you see the sun, the moon and the stars, even all the host of the heavens, you be drawn away and worship them and serve them.
God doesn’t want us to rely on the stars to receive wisdom, His or any other. He is concerned that in gazing at the stars we will be pulled away from reliance upon Him and start worshiping those stars instead of Him. Now, if He is concerned that we will go to the stars, and that this is not reliance upon Him, I think that’s a good clue that He doesn’t give us His wisdom through the stars.
Now, I am not saying that you shouldn’t look at the stars. And I am not saying that you shouldn’t pick out the constellations, they alone are not wrong or sinful.
What I am saying is that there are so many warnings in the Bible for us not to get involved with telling the future, telling the future with use of the stars and divination, that its foolish to be involved in it. Not only will we not find true wisdom there, we will be judged for it.
We are to be led by the Spirit. Romans:8:14. If we are led by the Spirit, that inward presence of Christ, then we cannot be led by the stars. God wants us to rely on Him. He wants us to get our wisdom from His Word. His Word is clear that Astrology isn’t something He created. It is the creation of man at the least and most likely a collaboration of man and Satan so that the Enemy can get God’s worship.
Thank-you! Question answered…
Thank you Sylvia..

Nice article ! but I must say that it is very hard to believe that people now days can actually believe in all the god nonsense… I was just going to use your article as a poke to a “christian” friend of mine that posts the horoscope each day … :p oh ,, and btw ,, looking to the stars just might open up your mind to how arrogant of a thought it is to have, that we are all that is out there … 😐
Wow Jeff. You took the words right out of my mouth about being arrogant. Share away.
Great Article!
Thank you so much. I had been looking for something to help a friend who is very young in the faith but everything seemed so judgemental or just didn’t answer the question clearly enough.
Thanks for commenting, Misty. I hope you can use the article to help your friend.

I don’t attend church anymore because of this but I talk to god and ask him to help me with the things that trouble me and to help me understand . and ever since I started doing that .. I read articals like this more often and I ask people more questions now .. can u please enlighten me or give me a good Place to start making my life and myself better for god ?
Hi Nikki,
I’m not sure what you are asking….. Are you asking where you can find more information on this topic? What is it you are wanting to know? Maybe I can help if you ask your questions here.
My best advice to you is to find a Bible believing Church, attend faithfully, put your faith in Christ and live according to His Word, not the horoscope. Let me know if I can help you by answering any other questions.
Astrology is the “interpretation” of an assumed influence the stars (and planets) exert on human destiny. This is a false belief. The royal astrologers of the Babylonian court were put to shame by God’s prophet Daniel (Daniel 1:20) and were powerless to interpret the king’s dream (Daniel 2:27). God specifies astrologers as among those who will be burned as stubble in God’s judgment (Isaiah 47:13-14). Astrology as a form of divination is expressly forbidden in Scripture (Deuteronomy 18:10-14). God forbade the children of Israel to worship or serve the “host of heaven” (Deuteronomy 4:19). Several times in their history, however, Israel fell into that very sin (2 Kings 17:16 is one example). Their worship of the stars brought God’s judgment each time.
The stars should awaken wonder at God’s power, wisdom, and infinitude. We should use the stars to keep track of time and place and to remind us of God’s faithful, covenant-keeping nature. All the while, we acknowledge the Creator of the heavens. Our wisdom comes from God, not the stars (James 1:5). The Word of God, the Bible, is our guide through life (Psalm 119:105).
Hi, I found this website because I was watching television and a yearly horoscope for the new year came on and I sat there and listened to it.I don’t really don’t ever pay attention to those things but I suggested I was going to have a rough year, it really bugged me but I know its not christian like to listen to those things,I ask you to prayer for me and my family so God can be with us and protect us from these occult practices as I too will pray for us. Thank you
Bridget, I would be honored to pray for you and your family.
Rely on the Lord. Whether your year is rough or not, realize the truth that the Lord knew what your year would be and He has a plan for you that is intended to benefit you and grow you spiritually.
I was wondering what do you know about the astrology and demons are they some way related if you could research that as well as I
Tiffany, I think the article above says what I know, which is that at worst, it can be an occultic practice, which means that it provides opportunity for demons to to have contact with humans who participate in it.
Thanks for opening my eyes to the truth. I read horoscopes for innocent fun and now I know the reality of such actions.
What a great reference, thank you Sylvia. This is exactly what I was looking for because my niece who says she is a Christian and loves Jesus, subscribes to a daily horoscope on Facebook, and I just finally had to say something, so I quoted Hilde above and referenced this blog post.
I’m so glad you could use it to help you, Roxie.
I once heard someone say:”don’t look at the stars for your answers, look at the One Who made those stars!” I really like that.
Thanks for encouraging us to stand fast on the Word!
Thanks for this article! For me, things like horoscopes (and even Bible verse daily calendars) can be a snare for me when I get impatient with God. I end up looking for my answers elsewhere – looking for meaning that isn’t there, because God isn’t giving me the specifics I want.
We just have to be patient and let God unfold His work in His own time! 🙂
Well said Sylvia! Thanks
Thanks for the article! I think it was well written and Biblical!
Keep on telling the Truth!
Tiffany
