Very Easy Homemade Toothpaste

3 Tbsp coconut oil
3 Tbsp baking soda
1/2 – 1 tsp salt – I used “Real Salt” which has minerals in it and may help in remineralization of tooth enamel.
15 drops peppermint essential oil
1 packet stevia or monk fruit or other natural sweetener that does not cause tooth decay

Put all ingredients in a bowl and mash it up with a fork, keep stirring til you have a creamy, toothpaste consistency. Kept under 78*F this toothpaste will be firm but over 76*F it gets loose and liquidy because coconut oil melts at that temperature.

I like this toothpaste, its kind of salty so next time I might use less salt. I used 15 drops of peppermint and that is enough for me, you could use more if you like. Also, some people use vegetable glycerin in it, but I think it would keep the paste gooey when its below 76*F, I like it firm. If you wanted to add glycerin, just add a teaspoon.

Also – I am not a fan of stevia so I used monkfruit however when I was a kid my Mother made this and didn’t use anything to sweeten it at all, therefore I am sort of used to it plain and I use it like that. You can too if you don’t like sweeteners. It takes a little getting used to. I think the peppermint helps with the taste.

I haven’t tried homemade tooth paste. I’ve made tooth powder before. Often I use straight baking soda to brush with.

I like the homemade paste better than straight baking soda and better than baking soda and salt combined. I grew up using that and I don’t like the taste. The peppermint and coconut oil helps with that!
