Hymn Study ~ The Holly And The Ivy

The Holly and The Ivy is one of my favorite songs. It is the song I sang for my try-outs for a school choir and it always plays in my house in the winter. HOLLY

The lyrics have been around since the 15th or 16th century, The imagery of holly and ivy come from pagan roots. In this song, the holly and the ivy have been Christianized and represent the blood of Jesus Christ and life everlasting.

The tune that is commonly used with these lyrics has been around probably as long as the lyrics themselves, although the song we hear today was modernized and published by Cecil Sharp (1859–1924).

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a blossom
As white as lily flower
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To be our sweet Saviour
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a berry
As red as any blood
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To do poor sinners good
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a prickle
As sharp as any thorn;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
On Christmas Day in the morn.
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a bark
As bitter as any gall;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
For to redeem us all.
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly and the ivy
Now both are full well grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown.
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

Mary I really enjoy hearing choirs at Christmas, especially like this particular song sung by a choir.
