My Homemade Cough Medicine

tea

Here is my homemade cough medicine recipe.  I make a quart jar of this every year and we go through it in about 3 months. It will keep nearly forever at room temperature.  I find that it feels good on a sore throat if it is heated up before administering.

We also take it dissolved in hot tea, its delicious!

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar ( Bragg’s is great)
2 tablespoons honey (local raw honey is best)
2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (add 1/2 tsp if you can stand it, its good for you!)
1 teaspoon grated, fresh ginger. Peel first.
Mix well, store in a tightly covered jar at room temp. Use a teaspoon at a time, as needed, for cough and/or sore throat. It might be too hot for small children so reduce the hot pepper accordingly.

you need some whisky in there all that does is burn the crap out of your throat

You can certainly add some whiskey if you like! We like it just like this for the most part. It works great and I haven’t found that it burns at all except if your throat is very raw. And in that case, whiskey won’t be much better!

It seems this recipe doesn’t make very much. How much of each ingredient do you use to make your quart jar of it? I’ve used a recipe the family doctor gave my mother decades ago that included onion. Your recipe would be much easier to make.

That is a great question, thank you! If you’ll notice, the first three ingredients are equal in amount. So you can use any measurement of each of these three as long as they are equal. So I use about 1 cup of each of the first three ingredients then I add about 3 inches of peeled and diced ginger and about 1 teaspoon of red pepper. You can add the pepper a little at a time until its suitable for you.
