Brown Rice and Figs For Breakfast

If you are trying to go from a typical American diet to more of a whole, natural foods diet, you may find that breakfast is a difficult meal. We used to eat all those sugary cereals for breakfast and I have no doubt that if I put them in front of my children today, they would eat them happily. Thankfully, they like my homemade cereals and granolas enough not to go on breakfast strike.

In my quest for new and tasty breakfast ideas, here is a brown rice cereal with figs. I cook the brown rice the night before with cinnamon to flavor it. I use 1 teaspoon of cinnamon for every cup of cooked rice or for every 1/2 cup of raw rice.

The next morning I chop up figs and set out the brown rice syrup and cane sugar. Everyone builds their own bowl full and some heat it in the microwave. Some even pour a bit of raw milk over their rice and figs.

Its filling, tasty and as sweet as the individual wants it to be. So simple.

I know I would like this breakfast… the others would try it… the main thing though is if it’s hot and ready– they’re much more apt to eat it!

Wow, am I sheltered. The only figs I have ever eaten have been in Fig Newtons. This looks delicious!

    Hi Sylvia,
I just had to comment on this. My dad grew up in Arkansas, where rice has always been farmed. He said he had it for breakfast most of the time. He doesn’t eat it as a dinner food, because he grew up eating it sweetened and can’t seem to get past thinking of rice as a sweetened breakfast food. Btw, he’s 84 and still in good health, so it must have helped!
    Blessings,
