We have had fun with this recipe since it was the favorite of Almanzo Wilder in Farmer Boy and we are reading the Little House on the Prairieseries this year….

Ingredients

  • Three large apples (tart is best), peeled, cored and sliced
  • Two white onions, cubed
  • 1/3 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar, or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. each nutmeg, cinnamon, and/or mace
    1 tsp. vanilla (optional)

    Melt butter in skillet over medium fire. Put in onions and stir for about two minutes, then put in the apples.
    Cook together for about five more minutes, then add brown sugar till a syrup forms.
    Add spices and vanilla; continue to cook till the onions become transparent. Serve hot. Serves about 5
